Harris Nishikawa

Some sad news,

Roy received the email below from Chris Gampon and thought it was important to blog.

Aloha,

It is with great sadness that I send the news that Harris Nishikawa, Kiahuna’s former Grounds and Landscaping Manager, has passed away.

For those of us that knew Harris, we understand the great impact he had on this place.  Kiahuna is admired, copied, photographed, and world renowned for the beauty of the landscaping and magnificence of the grounds and open space.  No one person has impacted that legacy more than Harris Nishikawa.

Harris started his work at Kiahuna straight out of college.  From the early 1970’s he did everything from weeding to managing the grounds and landscaping operations.  Harris spent his entire career, of more than 43 years, at Kiahuna Plantation.  Over the years Harris worked for Moana Corporation, Village Resorts, Inc., and Outrigger Resorts.  Regardless of the management company, Harris’ faithful efforts were always a part of keeping Kiahuna’s grounds and landscaping at the highest levels in the industry.

Harris retired from Kiahuna Plantation in 2015.  Since that time, we have kept him as part of our ‘ohana.  He was always invited to, and attended, our employee get togethers.   It was always nice to welcome Harris back to his Kiahuna home and to share time with him.

On a personal note, I have known Harris for almost the entire time he worked at Kiahuna.  When first hired, Harris worked under one of my uncles.  This goes back to the early 70’s when the garden mostly surrounded the Plantation Gardens Restaurant.  From that time until today, I have known Harris to be an outstanding person, dedicated to his family, and loyal to his extended ‘ohana to the end. It was my privilege to call him my friend.
