During these trying times citizens from across the globe are taking steps to stem the spread of the Coronavirus. Not all citizens have been asked to stay home or close their businesses. Those who have are experiencing immediate financial hardship and are at risk of losing their small businesses. The sacrifice others are making illustrates the resolve necessary to address the situation responsibly.
Here in Kauai we are not under orders to close our businesses or to stay home. We have a curfew from 9pm to 5am and have asked those who have planned vacations to Kauai to re-schedule those trips. There are recommendations from our state government and from the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) and we are implementing relevant recommendations while we remain open to the membership. The Poipu Beach Athletic Club will remain open for business unless we are required to close.
The staff of the Poipu Beach Athletic Club have many concerns. The PBAC currently employs 32 individuals and our tenant, the Cabana Bar and Grill, employs many, many more. These livelihoods depend upon the PBAC remaining open. To keep these incredible people working and earning a paycheck we have taken measures to address the Coronavirus in a responsible manner. You will see a very proactive effort by our entire staff to clean, clean, clean. We have implemented distancing measures around the pool, in the gym, at the check-in and with our fitness programs. The staff recognizes the magnitude of the situation and is aware that their jobs could be lost if the Club is required to close. They are willing to stay on the job to provide a venue in which our members can relax and pursue their health and wellness.
The support of our members is also critical to the Club’s ability to stay open. The revenue generated by the monthly dues is the financial backbone of our business. Membership comprises of both local members and vacation rental members. We anticipate reductions due to the contraction of the tourism industry generally and visitors to Poipu specifically. While the loss in revenue from our resort and vacation memberships is likely to be significant, we are in a position to weather those reductions in the short-term. Our local members are also critical to our financial survival. Local members continue to support the Club and appreciate the staff’s effort to keep the club open as one of the few options for exercise, recreation and enjoyment.
We are asking all of our members to honor their contracts and support the PBAC. The Club is a fun, pleasant and happy environment where our members can enjoy a vast array of amenities. While we cannot suspend all accounts under contract, we have decided to offer a credit to our individual, joint and family memberships in an effort to expand our commitment to the community. If you believe your financial circumstances warrant a credit, please email us and we will discount your membership dues 50% for the month of April. Again, please ask for this discount only if you need it. After we see the impact of this discount, as well as the reduction of revenue from our resort and vacation rental memberships, we will re-visit this issue for the month of May. We greatly appreciate the support of our staff and members as we work together to keep our Club in operation while the government leads us to overcoming the Coronavirus.
Having created this venue at the end of 2013 and watching it struggle through the early years to reach the success of today, I am proud of our amazing staff and overwhelmed by our member loyalty. Both staff and members form a friendship network for me personally and I look forward to every visit. I still have plans to expand the club and will do whatever I can to make sure the Poipu Beach Athletic Club not only succeeds, but also exceeds your expectations.
Stay healthy and enjoy one another wherever and whenever possible. The Poipu Beach Athletic Club intends to be that place today and for the foreseeable future. Thank you all for everything you do to make the Club a special place.
